“On the one hand, you’d think that’s a pretty high default rate [with nine Pioneer ACOs leaving the CMS program]. The guys in the Pioneer program are supposed to be the cream of the crop, and if anybody is going to succeed at this ACO model it should be those guys. But I don’t think we can be too surprised that these guys in particular are dropping out, because since they are the cream of the crop, or presumably the best of the best, they’ve probably already done a lot of the hard work that needs to be done in order to get savings out of their systems and there just wasn’t a whole lot left for them to get more efficient at.”
