Operation Lone Star Provides Free Medical Care to South Texas

The Texas Department of State Health Services and its partner organizations will bring free health care to five sites in South Texas next week. As part of Operation Lone Star, people can get services including student physicals, child immunizations, hearing and vision exams, and other health screenings. Dental care will be available at two sites.

“Operation Lone Star gives people who may not receive routine medical care the opportunity to see a doctor and learn more about their health,” said Dr. David Lakey, DSHS commissioner. “We also hope to connect people with regular care so they will be healthier in the future.”

Operation Lone Star also provides training to the emergency responders who would be involved in setting up and running clinics in the event of a public health emergency. The clinics are a cooperative effort of DSHS and other state health and human services agencies, Cameron County Department of Health and Human Services, Hidalgo County Health and Human Services, City of Laredo Health Department, Texas Military Forces, the U.S. Public Health Service, Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps, and community volunteer groups.

Dental services for adults and children will be provided at the PSJA High School site, and children’s preventive dental services will be offered at Ringgold Middle School. All clinics will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. For more information, call the local health department or dial 2-1-1.
