Mark Farrah Associates noted in its latest Healthcare Business Strategy report that most of the leading health plans saw aggregate enrollment gains for 3rd quarter 2014 but experienced downturns in profitability. Here is what they found:

Profitability saw a slight downturn for the majority of leading health plans for third quarter 2014, when compared to 2013.

  • Aetna's 3Q14 profit margin was 4.4%.
  • UnitedHealth's 3Q14 profit margin was 5.89%.
  • Anthem's 3Q14 profit margin was 3.8%, a decrease of 0.7% year-over-year.
  • Kaiser was the only top plan to report improvement in profitability for 3Q14 with a profit margin of 7.26%, an increase of 1.9% from the previous year.
