In 2012, among commercially insureds in the U.S.:

  • Spending on specialty medications to treat complex diseases increased by 18.4%, while total spending on traditional prescription drugs fell 1.5%
  • Drugs for Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis saw a 9% increase in utilization and 14% increased unit cost.
  • Drugs for cancer medications saw a 3.4% increase in utilization and 22.3% increased costs
  • Drugs for hepatitis C saw a spending increase of 33.7%
