Economic Burden of Prediabetes Up 74% Over Five Years


According to a recent study released by the American Diabetes Association:

  • 48% overall jump in direct/indirect costs associated with diabetes over 5 years compared to 2010.
  • 27 percentage points of the 41% increase in medical costs stems from people diagnosed with diabetes.
  • 14 percentage points of that rise comes from growth in the average cost per case of diabetes.
  • The cost of prediabetes increased 74% (to $44 billion).
  • The cost of undiagnosed diabetes increased 82% (to $33 billion).
