Analysis of Medicare Spending by Age


According to a recent report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, people ages 80 and older accounted for 24% of the Traditional Medicare population and 33% of Traditional Medicare spending in 2011. Below is the distribution of Traditional Medicare beneficiaries and Medicare spending for 2011:



Medicare population
·         Age 80+ (24%)
·         Age 70-79 (32%)
·         Age 65-69 (26%)
·         Under age 65 (18%)


Medicare spending
·         Age 80+ (33%)
·         Age 70-79 (30%)
·         Age 65-69 (15%)
·         Under age 65 (22%)
