Hospital Strength Index: Projected Improvements

According to the Hospital Strength Index, if all U.S. hospital markets and facilities performed at a health strong level (median of the health strong hospitals) then the results listed below would be feasible:

  • $6.5 billion in outpatient costs could be saved from Medicare alone.
  • $4.3 billion in inpatient savings could be realized from the Medicare program.
  • Total outpatient charges could be reduced by nearly $33 billion.
  • Total inpatient charges could be reduced by nearly $23 billion.
  • Readmissions could be reduced nearly 4%.
  • 74,000 lives could be saved (by reducing facility mortality rates to the Health Strong median).
