“To offset the financial impact of [the increase in generic drug prices], different payers are identifying outlier generic drugs and, when appropriate, restricting their use by prior authorization or removal from formulary. I’d suggest that limiting access to generic drug products is a new paradigm for payers. Some payers already have made a step in that direction by creating a ‘non-preferred’ tier in the generic drug category utilizing a higher copayment structure for that tier.”
