The Dartmouth Institute recently released a study on characteristics of the ageing American population. Here are some key findings from the report:

The number of
Americans age 65+ is expected to increase from 43.1 million in 2012 to 83.7
million by 2050.
·
From 2012-2050 the
number of people age 85+ is projected to rise from 5.8 million to 19 million.
·
9.5% of the population
will be age 70 or older by 2030.
·
Of the 40.3 million
people age 65 and older in 2010, 84.8% identified as white.
·
From 2000-2012, the
number of Americans age 65+ living in nursing homes fell from 1.6 mil. to 1.3
mil.
·
Medicare
beneficiaries, on average, saw 3.4 different clinicians during 2012.
