... of 497 trauma patients at their discharge from the hospital:

• 204 (65%) of the patients had functional reading skills below the grade level of their discharge summaries
• Just 74 patients (24%) had adequate reading skills to understand their discharge summaries
• 40 patients were readmitted to the hospital within 30-days, 65% of whom had inadequate reading skills to understand
  their discharge summaries
