"I think the health insurance industry needs one central, consolidated voice. This friction that is working through right now, it will of necessity be short-lived because there needs to be one consolidated voice. When the White House wants to engage with the plans they are not going to call 10 different health plans. They are just not going to do it. So, that is why you need a trade association that has all of the major players as members....[Health plans] care about shared priorities like Medicare Advantage rates, the future of exchanges, the rising costs of technology. There is a set of common interests so I would expect that at some point and time you are going to see larger companies come back under the tent. I think from time to time a company needs to express itself...and that is what we are seeing here [with Aetna Inc. leaving AHIP six months after UnitedHealth Group's departure in June 2015]."
— Dan Mendelson, president of the consulting firm Avalere Health, an Inovalon Company, told AIS's Health Plan Week.
