There Were 253 Healthcare Breaches on 112 Million Records in 2015


Forbes recently published an article on healthcare data breaches as reported to the Office of Civil Rights. Here are some key findings from the data:

·         There were 253 healthcare data breaches in 2015 with a combined loss of over 112 million records.

·         The top 10 data breaches accounted for 111 million lost, stolen or inappropriately disclosed records.

·         4 of the top 6 breached were Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations.

·         38% of the incidents were reported as "Unauthorized Access/Disclosure."

·         9 of the top 10 breaches were reported as a "Hacking/IT Incident."

·         The largest single breach represented over 70% of the total records compromised.
