According to a recent study in which Emergency Department patients over age 65

... were asked whether they could get out of bed, walk 10 feet, turn around, and get back in bed without help:

  • 12% of those who said they could perform the task without help, needed some help or were unable to complete the task
  • 48% off those who said they could perform the task with a cane or walker, either needed help or were unable to perform the task
  • 24% off those who said they could perform the task with help, were unable to perform the task even with help
