According to a recent study of 5,718 inpatient stays in 8 Intensive Care Units (ICUs):


  • The risk of death increased by 3.5 when the patient-to-nurse ratio was greater than 2.5
  • The risk of death increased by 2.0 when the patient-to-physician ratio was greater than 14
  • The adjusted relative risk of death during times of high patient turnover was 5.6
