According to a recent report:


  • Total healthcare costs for a typical American family of four covered by an average employer-sponsored PPO plan in 2016 is $25,826, compared to $8,414 in 2001
  • Of this, the employer pays $14,793 and the employee pays $11,033 through payroll deductions and cost sharing
  • In 2016, employers pay 57% and employees pay 43% of total healthcare costs, compared to 2001, when employers paid 61% of costs while employees paid 39%
  • Prescription drugs comprise 17% of the total family healthcare expenditures
  • Specialty drugs make up about 35% of total prescription drug costs, and almost 6% of total healthcare spend
