"Primary care doctors make bad referral decisions, referring non-surgical cases to surgeons."


— Andrew Haig, M.D., vice president for accountable care at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich., who went on to tell the audience at a recent National Value-Based Payment and Pay for Performance Summit, sponsored by Global Health Care, that hospitals make money on spine surgeries and MRIs and these problems can't all be attributed to overtreatment by spine surgeons.
