A recent study compared the rate of deaths


that occurred within 30 days of emergency admission or planned surgery admitted on weekends compared to those admitted during the week. The chance of death within 30 days of the weekend admissions was:

  • 8% greater in 11 hospitals in England
  • 13% greater in 5 hospitals in the United States
  • 20% greater in 6 hospitals in the Netherlands
  • No different for 6 Australian hospitals after 30 days, but showed a 12% higher chance of death after 7 days for the weekend admissions
