According to a recent analysis of 45,071 Emergency Department (ED) discharges,


... 4.1% of the patients returned to the ED within 72 hours. Of the factors that contributed to the returns:

  • 94.9% were illness-related
  • 1.6% were patient-related
  • 3.5% were physician-related
  • Management was considered to be suboptimal in 7.4% of the return visits
