According to a recent report:


  • Enrollees in plans purchased on the health insurance exchange spent 21% less out-of-pocket on all prescription medications, and 20% less out-of-pocket on specialty medications in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the first quarter of 2014
  • From January 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015, 42% of all pharmacy spending among exchange plans was for specialty medications
  • Exchange plan costs for prescription drugs were 36% lower per member per month in the first quarter of 2015 compared to the first quarter of 2014
  • In 2014, over 68% of total Rx drug spending in 2014 was done by 5% of exchange plan patients
