2 in 3 Uninsured Minority Children Have Special Healthcare Needs


The International Journal for Equity in Health recently released an article on uninsured minority children. Here are some key findings from the report:

·         Latino and African-American children account for 53% of uninsured American children.

·         64% of uninsured minority children have no primary-care provider.

·         The most common reason for insurance loss was expired and never reapplied (30%).

·         49% of parents were aware that their uninsured child was Medicaid/CHIP eligible.

·         Of uninsured minority children, 38% had suboptimal health and 2 in 3 had special healthcare needs.

·         35% of parents had financial problems due to the child's health.
