Telehealth Reimbursement 40% Lower Than Non-Telehealth Claims


The Health Cost Institute recently conducted an analysis on telehealth reimbursement trends. Here are some key findings from the report:

·         Telehealth claims submitted by primary care providers have increased from 1,246 in 2009 to 2,558 in 2013.

·         Average reimbursements for telehealth claims decreased from $68 in 2011 to $38 in 2013.

·         The average 2013 reimbursement was nearly 40% lower than that for non-telehealth claims in 2013.

·         7 states have passed laws that mandate reimbursement parity between telehealth and non-telehealth care.

·         Half of telehealth-related state policies were implemented in the last five years..

·         Over 200 telehealth-related legislative bills were introduced in 2015.
