Earlier screening of diabetes may lower risk of heart problems

A study in Diabetes Care found that almost 11% and 13% of people would likely experience a cardiovascular problem within five years if screening of type 2 diabetes was delayed by three and six years, respectively, compared with nearly 8% when screening was not delayed. Researchers evaluated data from a large European study of people without known diabetes, ages 40 to 69, and found no difference in cardiovascular outcomes or death after five years among those who received intensive versus routine treatment. The study used a computer model to estimate what would happen to participants if they had not been screened. Reuters
