According to a recent analysis of vital statistics...

... the age-standardized death rate per 100,000 including all causes fell by 42.9% from 1969 to 2013. Specifically:

  • deaths from stroke decreased by 77%
  • deaths from heart disease decreased by 67.5%
  • deaths from unintentional injures decreased by 39.8%
  • deaths from cancer decreased by 17.9%
  • deaths from diabetes decreased by 16.5%
  • however, the death rate for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) doubled
